We have that other thread that spoke about 'She Wore a Yellow Ribbon' as being one of the best Western's done. I think the whole 'cavalry' trilogy by John Ford with John Wayne are great films. Want to have some fun and ask the Forum for their opinions on:

1. The BEST John Wayne Film
2. Their FAVORITE John Wayne Film

Other categories may be added as we go...

My personal favorites are True Grit, Chisum, Big Jake, Hellfighters, and Sands of Iwo Jima. The top film of these would probably be...tough choice...Chisum. ove the Ballad of John Chisum and the whole story of the Lincoln County War.

BEST Film: Sands of Iwo Jima (Have to also think of The Searchers and/or The Quiet Man)

Well, I've been living outside the box the past few months and I think I'll stay there and say "Trouble Along the way". [:'(]

In Harm Ways is my favorite, classic Naval Engagement there.

Liked Green Berets. But Sands of Iwo was my fav. I think that is the only film in which John's charactor dies. I liked alot of John Wayne movies. As a kid I watched them every chance I got. My wife likes I Love Lucy and there is an episode with John Wayne that is pretty funny....GP

1. The Fighting SeaBees
2. Wake of the Red Witch
3. The Cowboys
4. The Shootist (PERFECT last film for the man!)


As for Green Berets, I LOVE the Ballad of the Green Berets. GREAT song!

I remember my Father talking about people standing outside the theatre PROTESTING the film. Dad said it was the best publicity he could ever ask for to increase ticket sales,

I liked maybe 90% of Dukes' films..favorites?...The Horse Soldiers (loosely based on a real event) and The Shootist.
Loved Stagecoach as well.

How could I have forgotten Alamo? The man lost his fortune with that film.

Horse Soldiers was one of Dad's favorites. Loved the music and songs in it.

For pure eye candy I do love Hellfighters. Those oil well scenes are just fantastic. I finally tracked down the music to Hellfighters ad just love having it now. If you like soundtracks, please check out Screen Archives Entertainment.

Best John Wayne film - I think "The Searchers"

Favorite (real tough call)- can't call a favorite.
1) In Harms way (should be obvious why to everyone on this forum, the book was great too)
2) The Quiet Man (Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, and Victor McLaglen are amazing, and Ward Bond & Barry Fitzgerald never get their due recognition).
3) El Dorado (...The Duke is always enjoyable, but Robert Mitchum's scene in the bar when he gets mad at Ed Asner & company was priceless).

Yeah - way too many to list as 'favorite'.

EDIT: I have to add 'They Were Expendable', an all time favorite of mine. Again the supporting actors are terrific, and I always thought - "gee I wish Robert Montgomery was my commanding officer.."

Best John Wayne film "The Horse soldiers"

Favorite John Wayne films:
"Trouble along the way" Wayne as a football coach
"The Fighting Kentuckian" French refugee Napoleonic soldiers, backwoods Kentuckians, evil land grabbers in Alabama; along with a great fiddle scene.
"Red River"

My 11 and 8 year-old sons throw their favorite John Wayne film out as BIG JAKE. They love that movie. Nice combination of humor (You can call me Father, You can call my Jacob, You can call me Jake but if you EVER call me DADDY again I am gonna finish this fight!), story and action.

The Cowboys is a favorite of mine. The best? The last one I might happen to have watched.

True Grit ( I actually Saw John Wayne in Ridgeway CO when this was made. I also go elk hunting on the mountain next to the one with that open field charge)

There is some serious comedy in several of Wayne's films. I think of McClintok, War Wagon, Big Jake, and Hatari.

So many good John Wayne films out there.

Not sure it's his best, but my favorite is "The Horse Soldiers".

Probably a biased opinion, since my interest in the Civil War was peaking about the first time I saw it.

William Holden, another great actor, was in it.
