Problems transferring ships

I am really intrigued by this game in theory, but not in practice. I just cannot figure out how to do what I want when it comes to manipulating ships, ship groups and TFs and it is really killing my enjoyment of the game. I don't want to be sour grapes at all, I really appreciate the time and effort to keep this game alive, but right now I am just so frustrated with it!

Transferring ships between and out of TFs

I know how to get a ship group into a TF from a port. But I don't know how to transfer a ship from one TF to another when there are two TFs in the same hex, and I don't know how to transfer just one ship group from a TF to the port. I have tried pretty much every combination of right-clicking, left clicking, space barring, entering, etc. and I just can't figure it out. Some detailed instructions would be very appreciated.

Splitting up ship groups / the ship pool

Is there any way to split up a ship group into two or more ship groups of the same kind? For instance, at the begining of the game the Allies have AKs all over the Hawaiian Islands. I tried sending them all to LA just on their own, and they got hit by IJN subs to the SW (!) of Hawaii! Now I understand, the map is distorted. But what would heve been really helpful would be to split up one of the 4 DD groups that start at PH and send 1 DD to each island to escort them to LA. Ideally, I would be liek to be able to take two or more groups of the same type, combine them into one group, and then split that group up as I wish.

I tried using the ship pool to do this. I found that the (G) and (T) commands are only rarely available. I have not discovered a rhyme or reason to this, is it only available in certain ports? Also, is it true that with the pool you can't take say the 5 Dutch APs and create a group or two with them, rather you can only (G) them into an existing ship group. I am not trying to teleport ships from one side of the ocean to the other, rather just trying to use the pool to sort my ships.

Thanks for your help!

Here's what you have to do.

#1. Create a TF using the regular method (skip this if you have 2 TF's at the same hex/base)

#2. Select the TF you want ships to go TO. (you just select the TF like you normally would to give orders, etc., as the game keeps this in memory when you want to transfer ships).

#3. Select SHIP TRAN (when you click on the base or TF)

#4. Do NOT hit (P) or (G) as they say, but rather (SPACEBAR). This will then give you the option to get ships from one TF and put them in the one you selected earlier (in #2). You can actually get ships from any number of TF's at the same hex/base this way (but they will all go to the TF you select in #2).

Well, I swear I tried that at home before, and it didn't work, I'd get teh teh page where I can select individual ship groups and I never could, but now here at work it does! Hmm, I'll try it again at home tonight and let you know what happens.

I'm out of luck on splitting up ship groups, though, aren't I?

The (T) and (G) commands will not work if the base you are at is isolated, this includes Pearl Harbor on your first turn. Also you can not get (G) ships if there aren't any in the pool.

You can not transfer the ship(s) that are the Flagship of a Taskforce, so you can not transfer ship units from a TF that has only one ship( group of ships). Remember that you can select a different ship unit to be the Flagship if you have more than one ship unit in the Taskforce.

And, no you can not create new ship units from the pool or by splitting ship units( I would like to also).

There is no way to directly transfer a single ship(s) from a Taskforce to Port, you can however, create a new Taskforce, select the Taskforce you want to transfet a ship from to port, put the ship unit into the new Taskforce, and then disband the new Taskforce( costs no Preparation Points).

Ship Units not splitable

Just to make sure: There is no way to split a group of ships into two?

Playing my Japanese campaign I sometimes really would love to be able to split some groups of APs or DDs. It's quite annoying to have 8 Africa Marus in port and 3 small LCUs and you have to bring two other transport groups in to get all LCUs with you.

Bye,
Torsten

It is my understanding that multiship units (e.g. SS's, DD's. DE's, AP's. etc.) can not be split into subunits. Of course, if the unit is in a supplied port, it can transfer ships to and from the ship pool. Some players have "house rules" that do not allow one to transfer a ship form a multiship group in one port to a same class multiunit in another port.
