Engineers and Obstacles?

I'm in a game where I've placed a bunch of obstacles and barbed wire in defence of my positions. Behind much of this stuff are engineer units. Much to my chagrin, as soon as I ended the turn, my darned engineers started removing all the obstacles and barbed wire! Is there any way to stop them from doing this? Sheesh!

Well don't blame them

They are only doing what you told them to do. If you look at each engineer in the detail menu, (left click on it) you will see that each unit has a little green tab that says engineers will remove mines/obsticals in front of them. Well if you click on this once it will say "engineers will not remove mine/obsticals" and if you click on it once more you will see that it changes to "engineers will place mines in front of them' finally if you click one last time it will change it back to its original setting. So you need to tell them to stop removing them. It is the default setting.

One thing I like to do is put my engineers right behind AT obstacles and then set them to place mines - in the AT obstacle hex.
Your 10 point AT obstacle then becomes 5 points of AT and 5 points of mines. (maybe 6 & 6 depending on how many mines the engineer laid)
Best unit to bust through a minefield? Cavalry with plenty of arty smoke cover. You may lose a few cavalrymen to the mines, but most of the squad will still get through. This is particularly useful doing river crossing assaults. And, if you do this enmass, the defender won't know what hit him.

Actually, I did go through and change the engineers to 'place mines in front of unit'. I guess I must have missed a few . . .
