Having a Small Problem

Hello all, I've been playing this for a long time now, and I recently downloaded it on my laptop. I'm running Win ME. The game seems to load up fine, except the screen is black, and the only text i can see is yellow. I can discern no buttons, categories, only those options that are highlighted. I can move around in the categories by tinkering with the arrow keys, but the game it totally unplayable dur to a graphics glitch. I tried reinstalling, but to no avail. Anyone having this problem or know how to solve it. War in Russia gives me the same problem, but not quite to the unplayable extent that Pac War does. I would appreciate any suggestions.

First let me admit that I haven't tested this approach, as I'm still using W98. If nothing helps and you can't get the game going you might take a look at the FreeDOS Project at http://www.freedos.org. I use this to run dos sessions from within Linux and it works fine for me. So you might want to use a FreeDOS bootdisk and play from there.

Windows ME is THE worst operating system for running Pacific War. Microsoft deliberately made it almost impossible to change the configuration for DOS programs to free up enough memory. And the overwhelming majority of problems with Pacific War are caused by not enough memory. Some people are lucky--Windows ME sets up on their computers leaving enough memory free for Pacific War. (There have been several previous threads on configuring memory under various operating systems.) I would suggest you make a "boot disk" from Windows 98 to start up your laptop when you want to play the game.

Thanks for the Suggestions

I will try your suggestions, but I don't think the problem is memory related. It seems to be graphics related. From my dos days, I remember all the tricks to make memory usage more efficient, but I don't know anything about graphics drivers and the like. I guess I'll just have to wait til I get back home before I can load up Pac War. If anyone has any other suggestions, I would greatly appreciate them.
