Hi - i have had some time to try and get into this game more and i am quite attracted to all the complexity it offers, and am just starting with the March on Kiev scenario - i am wondering though do i need to do all the complicated attaching of units and things for this scenario or can i just go as is into the fray?

what is the benefit of attaching some unit or to a HQ - played through th etutorial and was shown this but i am still not clear on when to do this

Efficient use and assignment of SUs are a big part of the game. They directly affect CV values and combat outcomes. The general rule is to attach SUs directly to the units where possible because they will commit to combat that way without a leadership roll. You will need to experiment with them to understand their best use and placement as the manual is rather vague about it. Generally I like to attach motorized SUs to armor, mechanized, or cavalry units.

Most players will recommend that you stuff your units with as many pioneer/sapper units as you can for maximum fort busting power (however this seems rather unhistorical). Wheat and I have decided to use a House Rule that limits both sides to assigning no more than one pioneer/sapper per combat unit, other than HQs, which have no limit.

One other thing to pay attention to is to use whatever "free" SU moves you can and try to have a plan for moving things downstream because you can burn up alot of AP shuffling these things around randomly. By "free" moves, I am referring to the use of the automatic support level setting of 9 at the high level and 0 at the low levels to move them upstream "automatically" and the potential of SUs being moved to HQs when units disband or are withdrawn. Another useful tip I have noticed is the ability to move a SU from top level command to any fortification under that top level HQ in one move with 1 AP. From there it can be assigned to any nearby unit.

Hope this helps.

thanks though i what does SU stand for and CV for that matter - and what does moving upstream and downstream mean, i am not sure of what those evocative words translate to exactly in regard to in game actions - actually that whole last paragraph goes over my head, - perhaps i should just ask what perhaps is the best way for a beginner to WITE to approach this game, starting with say the Kiew 41 scenario

SU = Support Unit - those units that don't appear on the map but exist attached to those that do (HQs and Combat Units(CUs)

CV= Combat Value - an estimation of the power of a unit and shown as the first number at the bottom of a counter.  The higher the better.

Imagine the order of battle looking like a river delta. Upstream means attaching SUs to Army and Army Group HQs.  Downstream means attaching them to Corps and Units.

If I remember back to the dim and distance past when I had freetime and no 2by3 games addiction....here's my rough thoughts.

- Start with Axis on Easy.
- Learn how to move your units around the map and how to attack - both hasty and deliberate.  Get a feel for how much is enough - it is as much art as science.
- Once you can do that start looking at re-attaching units - i.e. Units attack with the same Corps HQ and then add in SUs.
- Look at where you need to position HQs for best supply and using rail repair.

After that it begins to snowball.

thanks for the clarification - actually i was wondering about the rail repair - i noticed units in the kew scenario doing this, but i had no control over them

A couple of questions as I return to the game after a long time. (edit: this is 1.08 beta)

1- if you assign a SU to a division does it come from the nation pool or from the SU attached to the immediate HQ?

2- The Command screen is confusing me...in the image below ( Road to Leningrad set up)

Why is the 291 inf. listed above it's HQ (XXVI Corp HQ.)?

The distance to HQ for (61 inf. 217 inf. and 291 inf.) is listed as 4 yet they are 1 hex away.(edit: found the answer in the manual appendix...)
