Around 1988 the USAF decided to retire the last of the Teletype machines and replace them with these new fangled computers. So I had to cross train. First I wanted Inside Plant - Tech School was a 1/2 year and I couldn't take that much time off work. So how about Cable Dog - still a 17 week course. Maybe Admin?? - 12 weeks for that. Well personnel folks is there any Tech School less than 12 weeks? No. Nothing?? Well, we can make you an officer in six weeks!

Camp Pendleton 1981 - 1983; Instructor / Inspector duty (I&I) Denver Colorado 1984 - 1986; Camp Lejeune 1987 - 1989 2nd LAV BN; MCAGCC 29 Palms California 3rd LAV BN 1989 - 1992 with two visits to Okinawa Japan and a deployment to Saudi Arabia during the first Gulf War. Retired in October 1992 due to the Clinton cutbacks.

Note: Just before the first Gulf War, a new mechanic joined me at LAV AT Platoon. His name was SGT Bussy - a very hard working and capable mechanic. SGT Bussy was originally a Marine cook. One day, I asked him how he liked being a mechanic, compared to working as a cook. He explained to me that as a cook, he worked from 0430 until 2100 six days a week; that his new MOS was a piece of cake compared to what he used to do. This was very illuminating to me; beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

We unfortunately lost one LAV – AT too friendly fire during a very confused, close quarter’s night engagement against Iraqi armor. The LAV – AT’s fell back to secondary positions; one of the crews lagged behind and was out of place, forward of the new line. A fellow AT gunner misidentified the vehicle as the enemy and targeted that vehicle. One of my mechanics – PFC Scott Schroeder, was onboard and perished with the crew. Interestingly, Sgt. Bussy was originally assigned to the destroyed LAV but was unavailable (I have forgotten why) and Scott was his temporary replacement for that night. May God always care for you and your family, Scott.

Gents, it was all a good; the Navy and Marine Corps were outstanding Finishing Schools. We have all lost friends and experienced hardships. My respect to you all.

I served on three ships and in the Seabees.
Overall, I liked my time in the service

On Veteran’s Day I always think about my father and my uncles;
For me they were the real veterans.
Also, the one uncle I never knew:

Pfc Marvin D. Morrow, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division.
He was killed in action on November 17, 1944 near Hamich, Germany
As the “Big Red One” was pushing toward the Hurtgen forest.
He was 22 years old.

That happened 70 years ago today.
