Bought the game on Steam.

When I go to multiplayer, I get the options to login or create a new account.

When I try to login with the Slitherine account, I get the error: The serial number is blank.

When I try to create a new account, I can't, because I have not received a serial key.

BlackAlpha, we were just made aware of an issue from Matrix that causes the Steam version to not process a serial and it blocks multi-player at this time. We will be working with them to resolve this issue with the Steam version of the game. From what we have been told this only impacts the PBEM++ system. Standard PBEM should be fine. As soon as we have a fix, we will let everyone know and get it pushed out on Steam.
