Very good stuff! thanks
question on Seagull vs. Kingfisher
the game starts with Kingfishers on board BBs and Seagulls on board cruisers; was this related to hangar size? or simply giving high priority on the best FPs for BBs?
in other words, is it kosher to rebase Kingfisher on cruisers?

Some cruisers had Kingfishers, but it may have been too big for some cruisers.

Interesting. By the time I started working for Uncle Sam (1976) the seaplanes were a thing of the past. We had helicopters.
But I DID see lines used to transfer a person from ship A to ship B. I think the person being transferred was in a cage - but it was a LONG time ago (1977). Now we use choppers.

I read somewhere about a line transfer during WW II of a particularly unpopular ensign. The sailor on the conn just happened too let the two ships get a little too close during the transfer and the ensign got a bath. No injuries, just a friendly reminder to be careful who you tick off.

They're probably in the DB update that has the German raiders and U-boats in it. [:'(]
ETA: And the F8 Bearcats too.

In 1977 , I was a very green , just out of "A" school Airman , reporting to a Reserve Patrol Squadron. The enlisted aircrew ready room was a very intimating place at 1st. More than 50% of the enlisted flight crew were Chief or higher , and all had been in the USN/USNR "since Jonah was a midshipman". A very large percentage were WW2 vets , and Korea Vets. Vietnam vets were the kids.
To my great fortune these old timers adopted me. The stories (and medals ) they had were absolutely amazing.
But one AW1 was unofficially assigned as my "Sea-daddy". He was one of the oldest sailors I ever saw. Apparently he kept avoiding the Chief's exam so that he'd always have a "flight billet". (In those days there were no "high-tenure rules"). Along with teaching me how not to kill myself or others , he was a wealth of sea stories , and WW2 naval aviation history. When he'd tell you about Catalina's, Liberators and Privateers, he know from 1st hand experience (not to mention Neptunes, Ventura's and early Orions--he was teaching me the P-3A). One day I asked him, "So Dick, was the PBY your 1st plane?". He shook his head no and said, "no , before WW2 I joined the Navy as a Radio/gunner. Ever hear of a SOC?". "You mean the Seagull? HOW OLD ARE YOU DICK?" He laughed and launched into several more sea stories. Simply amazing!. [&o]

That cage was called a Bosun's chair. And you could lower someone enough so that the spray between the ships would soak them. But if it hit the water chances are it would be ripped away.

I do know I was glad we stopped using the Bosn's chair by the time I started going from Ship A to Ship B underway (only a couple of times - but didn't see a need for that kind of transfer).

There are some ships that don't have room for a helo landing , and a hoist transfer is extremely risky. Launching a boat is problematical. Bosun's chair are still in the fleet , there is still a procedure to use it, and probably will be till transporter technology is perfected. [:D]
But I'm sure it's not usually the 1st choice. But.......it's still there. [:D]
