Minefields--The bane of my existence

Hey, folks.
Thought I'd see if any of you can give me some advice with a problem during amphibeous assaults.
I have a MAJOR attrition rate (about 30-35% kia and another 60% heavily damaged) on my APs and AKs (not to mention the escorts) from mines.
My issue is sweeping them. I am having a lot of trouble getting the MSW convoy to do their job. I have tried toggling the retirement option, setting different home ports, all kinds of stuff. If I set them to partrol, they just sit there and don't sweep. If I base them out of the port they are trying to sweep, they just sit there. The only time I have ever gotten any sweeping done is when I send the task force from another location they sweep for 1 pulse and go back home (it was a Tulagi-Shortlands run). As it stood it took about 15-20 "sorties" to get the Shortland Islands completely swept.
Is there a better and more consistant way to sweep mines? Any insights you guys might have would be greatly appreciated.
