Talk about ominous. At the end of my first turn in my first-ever 1943 campaign game, after the invasion of Sicily, I saw this report in the Logistics Event screen:

Omar Bradley, of course, commanded the 1st Army at Normandy and, later, the 12th Army Group. He was later Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. The Bradley Armored Fighting Vehicle bears his name. More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omar_Bradley

And, in game terms, he's a good commander. Here's his game card:

I don't think it was a bug. He was in command of II U.S. Corps as it assaulted Sicily on Turn 1. As you can see, the game has credited him with three victories -- successful assaults on the Italian coastal garrisons.

I think in over a dozen games I've only had 1 U.S. commander killed. Very bad luck is all. No one would blame you for starting over.

Heck no, I think this makes things more interesting! Now I get to figure out who will command the 1st Army at Normandy.

I don't know much about Gen. Harold Whittle Blakeley, the general who has replaced Bradley in my game. I'll be watching him closely! His in-game stats are decent -- not great, but certainly not the sort of general I'd replace at this stage. We'll see how he does.

In real life, Gen. Blakely commanded the 4th Infantry Artillery Division at Normandy, and he's buried at Arlington Cemetery. Brief Arlington bio here: http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/hwblakeley.htm

I double-checked on the position of the II Corps in my game. It was, indeed, right off the beaches, supporting its attached divisions. I actually wasn't sure whether to move HQs on turn 1 like this, but I figured the combat units could use HQ support, so I put the II Corps right offshore. Here's a look:

That is just plain poor luck. Good luck with the game.

Bradley himself said (there is a Youtube video) that he was almost killed a number of times (especially when his jeep ran over a mine that failed to explode), and he figured that it was too improbable to be pure luck and had to be to keep him for some other higher purpose he was destined for. So if you are an atheist, it is more than probable that he should be killed before the end of the war...

Luck is a critical component of any great general's success and I think almost all of them would have been happy to tell you that. I'm sure many Napoleons, Caesars, and Alexanders died of very random things before they were able to come to prominence.

As Napoleon once said "I know he is a good general, but is he lucky?".

the more real the sim gets, the more chance no matter how small, major people get killed off, im on a beta atm where i lost 3 major ones, with Jeb Stewart going first, all in the same day in a matter of a few turns, so wasn't a great day for me either, but played on
