Do range one artillery units have to be adjacent to an enemy to attack or support?

Enemy - Friendly Infantry - Range One Artillery


In the above sequence of hexes, does the artillery support the friendly infantry on defense?
Can it support the infantry if it attacks the enemy?

It may attack/bombard units it is adjacent to. It may support units it is adjacent to.
