A/I Observations - new patch

I've been playing the Battleground Italy scenario as the Germans. A few observations -
During one game, around March 44, the German air stopped flying. It went 6 turns in a row with no German sorties or losses. Then the 7th turn there were no sorties, and some air lost on the ground. I tried all kinds of things but could not find a reason.
It appears if you can hold a foothold on Sicily, the Allies will not invade the mainland, at least in two games that has been the case.
Game #1 - I held out in Fortress Messina. The Allies invaded Corsica and Sardinia, but as of May 1944 have yet to set foot on the mainland. I even evacuated Messina to see what would happen, and 3 turns later still not Allies on the mainland.
Game #2 - Nov 43. I have 4 divisions holding a corner of Sicily around Messina. Still not Allied invasion of Corsica, Sardinia or mainland.
Also when playing as the Allies, it seems that a meaningful around the flank amphib will always see the Germans bailing out of their front line. My attempt at Anzio was successful with the Germans pulling back when they probably should not have. Also seems like you can lift more troops than historical. I put about 8 divisions into Anzio in one turn, with the amphib force and backup on transports ready to land in ports. The port size is somewhat limiting, but the amount of shipping seems infinite.
Love the game, but wanted to make these observations.
