Uranus as Axis ?

Hi,

Just picked up the game and am going to play around with the smaller scenarios in conjunction with manual reading but wanted to get a quick input from the game veterans out there about playing Uranus as the Germans.

This is where my true interest for the game lays.

So, a few questions:

- Were you able to win as the Axis in the Uranus (Full) campaign?
- Were you able to meet the High Order requirements to hold Stalingrad and Bogutschar?
- Did you encounter a flow in the battle that somewhat simulated Winter Storm?
- If not, were you able to carry out some alternative counter punch to Uranus?

Thanks for any input you can provide ...

- Don

Not exactly what you asked for as I haven't really played through Uranus Scenario. Rather I did try a few turns playing against myself to see how it looks.

Similar to the Case Blue or Trappenjagd it seems to me that the offensive side is somewhat favored allowing Soviets to gain more than historical. I don't think Axis could hold something like the Chir river line or Kotelnikovo against a human player. If you want something like Winter Storm then a bit of roleplaying is probably required. Obviously 6th Army would have to stay put but I think the Soviet side would also have to curb it's enthusiasm a little bit.

I believe there's an Uranus AAR on the forum. Could be worth checking although it's probably for an older version.

I play tested the Uranus scenario myself. But its very very hard on the German player. The more experienced player should definitely play the Germans and that player will need all the tricks in the book. I believe its possible to stall the Soviets enough though to reach the German victory condition, but only if the Soviet player is tactically less gifted.

I basically created the scenario for players who like defensive warfare, retreats, building new lines of defense, utilizing the small emergency units and experiencing a bit of the desperate ambiance of the winter of '42/'43 and the turning of the tide.

Remember that most German commanders got sacked during this turning of the tide. Its probably your faith as well as the German commander. Unless of course you manage to beat the odds... :)

Ohh. And I would like to say as well that the 'great' opration Winterstorm in game scale only meant the Germans reconquering maybe an area of 5 x 5 hexes. A very minor dent. Something that should be possible if the Germans manage to concentrate their remaining panzer divisions in a place where the Soviets are relatively weak.

best wishes,
Vic

Thanks to you both for your replies.

I am sufficiently scared enough now to avoid this scenario early on [:D]

First stop Voronezh ... then Case Blue ... Uranus at some point in the future, when (and if) I eventually feel like a Cyber-Ubermensch ..

Best regards,
Don
