Now, i may not fully understand how the direct support works but i have noticed that direct support fire missions have literally no advntages over the on call missions.

Both have the delay of 3 minutes but if you use direct support, you limit the arti support a lot due to obvious reasons (only 1 unit calls for targets, he may also get routed and you lose support until the next orders phase).

Something could be done to improve direct support, maybe reduce the delay to 2 min instead of the standart 3?

Direct support is a trade off as you point out. Most NATO forces will use on call and counter battery. Soviets will use this more when they have organic arty units attached to a combat recon unit. Once a lead recon hits the enemy, you get some fast and immediate suppression. Once the fight has grown in size, you may want to revert Direct Support units to On Call. If you are looking for flexible artillery use, stay on call with the FSCC running. You can also order strikes yourself as the commander that override all.
