Jan 10th 1938 Germans
The Germans hit the ground with their jackboots running, 1938 promises to be a good year for Germans and a bad year for Belgium's.

The Japanese war machine sputters into life, with some minor attacks in China, no great gains yet, but its early days.

The Soviet Union is attempting to secure its borders in this time of troubles.
We have reorganized our troops for greater efficiency and plan on incorporating Baltic territories, formerly members of the Russian Empire, into our Union. The USSR is the precious home of the Communist idea. Our state holds the promise of the future of all men. We must guard this jewel from any who would seek to rob mankind of its future. We had to restore Soviet ideals within our officer corps, a necessary, but painful process. Now with ideological purity assured our officers will apply new thought to the defense of the Soviet citadel.
The victory of communism is assured by the mesh of the dialectic. We have History on our side and thus do not harbor ill will toward nations. We want the World Revolution, not World War.

The United States of America has seen too much bloodshed happen in China, in what the Japanese terms as anti-bandit warfare. Alas, since it is not a full fledged war, according to the Japanese, we have not been able to implement sanctions against the warlike Japanese. Congress would simply not allow it. Therefore, I, the President of these United States of America, have asked the merchants that trade with Japan, that they consider if it is moral. A series of informational movies will be shown at theatres across the nation, showing just how barbaric this war is, and ask, if the American public should really trade with a nation that is so Warlike, that it would attack a state in disarray, like China, just for purposes of landsnatching and exploitation.
On behalf of the Nation,
Franklin D. Roosevelt
Or in game terms: Moral Embargo in Place!

Our planned occupation of the Baltic countries has begun, but is far from finished. Our troops are showing the effects of inexperience and have not been able to deliver effective blows against the defenders. We realize the moves have put us in a state of war with the western powers, but we hope to finish quickly enough that this operation will be seen more as an incorporation of lost territories, rather than an attack.
What seems like an aggressive move is actually defensive in nature. One of the major cities of the Soviet Union is right on the Baltic, far too close for comfort. We need a buffer to build defenses.

The Soviet Union has taken most of the Baltic territory. The people of the former Baltic states welcomed their comrades with open arms.

(editor's note : actually resistance was stiff, and Red Army losses far greater than anticipated.)

The Soviets finish off the Lithuanian forces.
The Red leadership is aware that what should have been a walk in the park was actually a hard fought campaign. The implications for the future have our attention.
We watch the war in the West with interest, as well as the Sino-Chinese campaign.

All is quiet in Eastern Europe.
The rapidity of the fall of Paris is shocking. Combined with the losses the Red Army suffered in the Baltic takeover we are reconsidering the purges.

The bridges are down to the west of Tsingtau causing supply issues for the Northern Japanese armies. Bridges have been thrown across the Yellow River to the NE of Yenan.
three large pockets of Chinese troops now must cause some concern for the Chinese high command.
