Dividing Units

I was wondering what the trade off is for dividing a unit up? The negative effect I think of is this takes a units attack and defense power and diminishes it. So what tactical advantage would one gain outside scouring the countryside with smaller units like a Recon unit.

IIRC you lose 20% proficiency when splitting a unit.

the up side is you cover more ground - so you can see more, you can convert more to "friendly" thus lessening movement costs next turn for following units, and perhaps you can get 2/3rds of it away if you are trying to disengage.

Thank you for your reply. So to use the split group to cover more ground you will therefore need to keep these groups with in close proximity in order to reform them.

There is an additional penalty. This is from 8.2.11 of the manual:

Formations with a large number of divided units are more likely to be forced into Reorganization as a result of combat losses
