Soviet vehicles and GRAU designations

Post by Alex1812 »

It will be nice if all Soviet systems may have original names using GRAU designations

SA-8 Gecko = 9K33 Osa
SA-11 Gadfly = 9K37 Buk
AT-6 Spiral = 9K114 Shturm

and so on

I have a pretty full listing and have toyed with the idea of doing that in the future. Right now I have them in a Western/NATO centric ID that most folks (again US and Europe) would know the systems by. I'm giving a strong thought to using the Russian IDs when we switch to Southern Storm and try to use more local names and ID as we go forward.
OTS is looking forward to Southern Storm getting released!

For our Soviet customers that would work. For those that served in NATO, they would be clueless. In this case that comes down to which of them would be recognizable by more of our customer base. Maybe a data base could be created with Soviet designations in them and shared with everyone?!

is there enough characters to allow something like "9K33 Osa (NATO:SA-8 Gecko)"

I'd like to see the native designators but as MR points out - I'm ex-NATO and more familiar with 'our' designators

I know this is terribly outdated (like 6 months) but...I'd love a dual-designation like this; perhaps with each being in a separate entry in the unit card?

So it'd show up like:

GRAU - 9K33 Osa
NATO:SA-8 Gecko
[Rest of the unit card info]

With an option to switch between which is the 'primary' designation on things like an option to choose your preferred data? Or maybe based on the army you're playing (NATO side gives you NATO designations, Soviets give you GRAU)? Further, how did the Russians designate NATO equipment? Did they have a similar system that could be also added as another set of options/more data?

Sounds like we need to find a way to have you guys edit the OTS data files with alias names for units and weapons. We'll have to discuss this one as we work with some data and modding items.

Maybe both names in the database and a game setting toggle for which to use.
