A Gallic units defense factor is noted as 1*.

Can anyone tell me what the * represents ?

[ Apologies if it's covered in the Rules or on this forum, but I have missed it despite a detailed search of each. [:(] ]

The asterisk indicates that there is a special rule for Gallic units.

There are two basic conditions:

1) Gallic units cannot be rallied during a battle even when their side has the superior commander.
2) Gallic units which were routed during a battle are lost (destroyed) if their side loses the battle. That happens when the battle is finalized.

Gallic units can be rallied if Hannibal is commanding and if he has used the "Inspired Troops" option from the Punic Tricks card. Of course this applies only to certain types of battles. You cannot use the "Tricks" in city battles, for example.

I had considered that the asterisk referred to these "general" rules re Gallic units, but thought I had better ask and therefore find out the correct answer.

Considering the answer, I am a little suprised that the asterisk here was sited against the defense factor, rather than more generally against the unit type name ( Gallic )...

You have a good point. The placement does imply that it has something to do with the defense factor. And in fact the rule is only tangentially related to the DF. But this usage is established now in the game and I suppose that gives it the respect due to precedence rather than logic. [:D]
