Currently playing a scenario as the allies and I want Automatic Air Directives to limit the range of the strategic day air forces to that of the range to of available fighter escorts. If it can be done, how?

Edit. Sorry, misread your post. Scott, is right. Automatic ADs work with partial escorts.

What I do is I pick a far off target...and observe where the green (escorted mission) hexes end.
Then I play with the staging base...move it to one that houses a lot of my fighters, or has fighters in the area.
I notice the new hex the green ends. Now I select a city near where the green ends...and change the staging base.
Note how many fighters actually escort under AUTO. Repeat a few times to closer and closer objectives until you get a fairly good idea where your fighters can actually cover.
Now whenever you select a mission in the future, you can pick hexes that are in range of your fighters
