A ferocious battle that was over-shadowed by the Bulge, which began a couple weeks after. Check out the movie 'When Trumpets Fade', which is set in the Hurtgen...it gave me some sense of the difficulty they must have had fighting in that closed, rugged terrain.

I have seen it. Didn't the Bulge start just a few days later, not weeks? You are right, it did not look like a picnic by any means...

I strongly endorse M4 Jess' "Beyond the Beachead" series to anybody who wants a "feel" of real American battlefield tactics using the whole Regimental Combat Team concept, with integrated components of infantry, armor, and artillery....If anybody did not know, the American "RCT" is the equivilent of the famous German "Kampfgruppes"....

I had trips to the Huertgen forest a dozen times or so. It´s still a very dark and dense forsets with many battle field relics to be found. Let me know whether you need some topo map scans for any Huertgen Forest scenario.;)
