LSD ship, aircraft operation?

LSD ships seem to operate float planes, however, they have a flight deck but are not able to receive traditional carrier aircraft?
I assume they will be able to operate helicopters when they become available.
Does anyone know if they're able to load traditional aircraft from the dock and fly them off the deck to a destination?

WWII USN LSDs did not have flight decks. Each was different than the others, however. No Allied helicopters in the game.

I believe colt6900 has meant Japanese LSDs -

They operated light aircraft and autogyros IRL.

It would have helped to define the side.

In game, I believe they will operate small fighter groups if you want them to... but you have to put float planes on them (Rufes?), then upgrade to the A6M5. Thing is, those fighters don't really have much use by the time you can do that. Probably still better off with float planes to counter subs.

Well, they really couldn't operate a true float plane like a Ruth. IIRC, some of them could (in theory) launch a real fighter like the Ki-43 or Ki-61, but could not recover them. Akitsu Maru is probably the ship the OP is talking about, and it was a vessel of the Imperial Japanese Army used as landing ship, aircraft ferry, and light carrier. Though in the latter role it could only launch and land small, slow recon craft such as the Ki-76 Stella or the Ka-1 Autogyro.
In game these ships should be limited to only those planes they could actually launch and land, thus you need house rule to cover it. IMO of course. [;)]

I don't know that you need a house rule to cover it, as 9 fighter planes operating off of an LSD isn't exactly game breaking and is definitely a sub-optimal use of the LSD's 9-plane capacity given its role at that point in the game. By the time you can upgrade from Rufes to A6M5s, a 9-plane CAP isn't worth anything (any invasions you'll be undertaking will face resistance stiff enough that it won't make a different). On the other hand, Rufes and other FPs can at least run naval search and ASW duty.

my efforts agree with what you said. Only float planes seem to work because when I tried to fly conventional fighters
on to the LSD flightdeck, the LSD does not show up on the transferred to ship screen.

But the upgrading trick works, assuming they actually operate from then onwards (and you never transfer them off). You'd just doing yourself a disservice if you do.
