Any thoughts on why they would order a Kilo class diesel? Is this a special forces use sub? Just curious.

As said before, ASW work close to home. Modern Diesels are also
very hard to find.
CRS report RL33153 page 12 gives some idea of this.

because project 677 met troubles, so 636.3 is stopgap solution
those six 636.3 (B-261,237,262,265,268,271) is last Kilos for Russian Navy
Now Russian Navy buys project 677

maybe the numbers will be reduced due to oil prices drops?
is there any working AIP modification for kilo class ssk's?

Man, 50 ICBMs. I wonder if those are all new or meant to replace old missiles. Also I don't know enough about START treaty to comment.

They'd better enjoy the procurement while it lasts. The Russian economy is nearing a free fall and next year the order list is going to be much thinner.
