When turning off the fully automated option to enter a new command, is the command retained before turning fully automated back on?

You should try using the forum where the game you are playing is being discussed. Or mention which game you are having questions with, the moderators will then move your thread/ post to the correct place, if you ask them in your next posting.

Hello AlisiusPrime,

I'll move this into the DWU forum for you. To my knowledge yes, however I'm probably not the best person to advise, so if someone from the community wishes to confirm this then please do. However I think that you can in fact leave automated on and issue orders anyway. The automation helps to support you, but you can always do you own thing anyway.

You can always interfere with automation, but depending on which automation, the AI will "overrule" you after a while.

This is true for both ship automation and all the other automation settings.

If you tell an automated ship to do something, it will be off automation. If you give some orders and turn automation back on, it will do its existing orders (including queued ones) and the AI will assign a new one once the ship is "idle". I can for instance drop an empty transport from fleet, tell it to move to my "core worlds" and then automate it, knowing that it will load troops on its own until full. Moving it makes sure it does not start in the "near front" worlds that I have already loaded from manually. In other cases, I can grab an automated exploration ship, tell it to "move to" a point in space where I have a "pirate hint", and automate it. It will move on after completing my move command (and finding whatever is there).

If you have automated design, and make your own frigate design, it will be there. But since the AI always redesigns after new tech, and the default build is the "latest", the AI frigate will be the default one soon enough. You "fight" automation. You can turn off the AI designs for frigates, though.

If you have automated troops, nothing prevents you from hiring or disbanding troops, but the AI will add/remove troops as it seems fit.
