Back when I first started I asked about making changes to the database and I was told that you had to make a copy of the scenario in this case the grand campaign. I currently have a game going but I would like to start a second game with the database "open" how would I do this? I use MichaelM's betas so how would I set that up?

Use the editor, open the scenario you want to copy, and then use Save As to save it to another slot.
