Brigade order chart on page 40 of the manual

I don't have the game yet (still at work at the moment), but I have been browsing the manual. It is very excellent, by the way!
What do the combat defense percent numbers mean exactly? For example, a brigade in mass charge has 150% combat defense percent. Does this mean they have better defense, or worse defense? How do we interpret the percentages? Are bigger percentages better or worse?
Also, I guess the same question applies to retreat percent, exploit percent and combat damage percent.
Thank you!

Thank you for the kind words. For defense, a bigger number is worse -- it means they take more casualties. A brigade preparing for a mass charge is exposing itself to fire and thus takes more casualties.

That is what I thought, too. But the chart is vague in explaining how the percentages work, and the 150% defense seemed like it increased the units defense. Thank you for the clarification.
What about the other three, retreat percent, exploit percent and combat damage percent?

It's a bit counter-intuitive, but we understand. Luckily, we have jglazier, who's questions are as good as any tutorial!

Hahaha. Well, I'm glad you understand, rosseau, but I still don't, and am hoping for a developer or Erik to help out here.

i'd have a go, but on holiday later today for a week and tbh would also maybe not be 100% correct either so better if one of them reply as it's too deep for me to be giving my opinion on it, as it may also be wrong, what i understand and what is happening maybe somewhere close but the mechanics under the game, working in the background are quite complex to fully put into words so they do it better, on the live stream is was given better if you seen that? it live but recorded so you can still watch the twitch feed now if you want, sorry couldn't answer it for you in the depth you may require

Also counter-intuitive for me. Shouldn't the defense percentage be less than 100%, not more than 100%? But also now that I know, it is what it is.

It is confusing. In my notes it's called the casualty modifier, but maybe Gil thought that *that* was confusing when he wrote that section of the manual. [:)]

Thank you, Eric. I like casualty modifier. That makes more sense to me.
What about the other percentages in the same chart, retreat percent, exploit percent and combat damage percent? Can you please explain how to read those, also?

Retreat and exploit are the chances that I unit will retreat in fire-combat when a retreat check is triggered (I can't remember all those circumstances offhand); exploit is the chance that a unit will follow-up and move into the hex abandoned by a retreating unit when fighting at range 1.
Combat damage percent is the modifier to casualties inflicted on the enemy during combat. So higher numbers are better!
