Torpedo won't fire

Hi folks.

Total and absolute newbie so I apologise if this has already been answered.

Just cracking on with the sub tutorial. I'm having difficulty getting my sub to engage the red sub and surface ship. I seem to sometimes fire torpedo, sometimes not. Tried auto and manual fire. On manual when the weapon window opens I see the ADCAP torp has DFN message next to it. I'm within range by a good distance and tried to launch at various speeds and depth.

In a nut shell, what am I doing wrong?

You're likely out of parameters. Best way to know though is to try the manual fire option and its dialog will tell you.

There is a setting in the side doctrine to allow kinematic torpedo launches, I pretty much always set it to "Manual only" when using something with really long legs like an ADCAP against a closing target.

My personal method is to fire, select the torpedo and set it to cruise, then quickly turn off the manual over-ride. Torp will then cruise out and kick it up to full once its seeker is locked on which is very handy (sometimes this happens automatically, I think its range dependent).

You need to play around a bit to get a "feel" for what ranges are possible, the biggest 2 factors are intercept geometry and how quickly you think that the victim is going to realize there is a torp in the water headed his way. IE a head on closing shot against a fast moving (deaf) surface ship with mediocre sonar can be taken at much longer distance than a rear aspect shot against a creeping SSN.
