The end of Windows

So a quick news piece this morning said that Microsoft announced that Windows 10 will be the last major version.

Future will have only small patch/updates but no longer will they issue major changes.

Just wondering if any of you in the know can explain what that means the future may hold.

Will the PC and windows be dead (with all out games)?

Will there be a total change to a new type operating system?

Time to buy a Mac?

Or Relax, all will be ok?

I think they have said they would change the name and their OS will start being named differently than Windows.

Windows is in some respects extremely annoying. DOS command structure is outclassed by running a bash shell. Registry entries. Batch files.

It's my hope they create a new OS that is Unix-like in its operation. From scratch. With a Windows compatability layer for legacy software.

Dare to dream.

Was Windows NT 4 supposed to be something like that? New Windows from scratch with MS-DOS compatibility for legacy software or whatever...?

Microsoft saying "Windows 10 is the last version of Windows ever" today is kind of like if Matrix said "War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition is the last version of WITP:AE ever" six years ago

That is, we're technically still playing the same game, but in the age of the internet and patches and constant connectivity, you can make a piece of software evolve to a whole hell of a lot without ever actually issuing another sequel. For another analogy, we're still using "Steam", but it's gone through an incredible number of changes in the decade or so since its first release.

This is one reason I never upgraded past Vista and never would have upgraded from XP but I needed VISTA for work they told me. I still have XP on most of my computers still. But, I KNEW something like this would happen and I was just waiting for it. Now with a lull perhaps in OS's I can upgrade to 10 feeling confident I will get to use it for as many years as I've used XP. Thus, I got to bypass and save money from not buying into Win 7 or Win 8. [:)] Hopefully I'll be on the way out before Win 11 comes along. But, you'll carry the torch won't you WINGS and WARSPITE ole boys? hehe[:'(]

As a consumer, they should have stopped while they were ahead, and that was at XP.

7 was pretty excellent as well imho.

95 was very good, XP was great, and 7 was very good.

No worries. Windows OS will always be around, just as other OS' will be, however there will be little or no interest in name or version. Instead developers are constantly going to tweak their OS.

Better take a closer look at Windows and Windows of the future. Now they are planning a "subscription" rate for new Windows after Windows 10. I knew it was too good to be true.

Yea, that is what I figured will happen. Ten will be last stand alone version and after that it will be rent-ware, bye-bye Microsoft, the fun times ends here for me. I won't be around much longer anyway.

When I heard "free" Windows X, I assumed it was a strategy forced on Microsoft to clean up their mess and get back to a unified customer base by making an offer that was too good to pass up. I didn't for a minute think that there wouldn't be charges down the road for every incremental package of improvements. They are just trying to follow Apple's strategy.

I'm not too distressed by the possibility of relatively painless periodic updates vs an expensive "new" OS every three years for big bucks (not to mention dicey upgrades that might require you to reload all of your software).

I knew windoze was a flash in the pan!

...just give me a moment to brush up on my config.sys & autoexec.bat skills.

...hmmm, or is time to brush up on my Prodos skills and go back to a real computer?

...or in a complete emergency, I still have OS/2 around here somewhere!

...but then again, I could just keep plugging along on XP.

Yeah as long as you stay offline with XP it still works just fine, but Matrixgames is going to upgrade someday and force us all to upgrade to a new OS. That's the sad part. Everybody has to stay up with the Jones and forget about their other neighbors.

What are you really saying there? My XP is going to stop working on the internet?

It was XCOM Enemy Unknown that finally pushed me into upgrading to Windows 7, although in retrospect it was entirely worth it for that one game.
