Quick intro.

35 year veteran of PC gaming going back to 3.5 inch floppy disks and the cheesy Eye Of The Beholder series. Before PCs, it was Atari and a room full of cartridges.

Had taken a few year break from gaming to attend to my business and finally decided this past week (May 20th to be exact) to get Distant Worlds Universe. Took me a while to get the game to work (ultimately needed to run DXSETUP as Admin) but today I finally actually got to start playing the game.

What have I gotten myself into? LOL

There is no question that this is the most immense PC game I've ever played. My head is spinning and I thought I had seen it all.

I won't even attempt to ask for tips because there is just so much here. So I'm going to take it one tiny step at a time and I'm sure I'll eventually make progress.

My gut tells me that this is going to suck a lot of time out of my life and my wife is going to be spending a lot of time watching TV and shaking her head at the addict sitting in the corner in front of the computer screen.

This could get very ugly. LOL.

Ditto!! I have watched about half the tutorials and have played around at the end of the tutorials a bit when they finish and my mouth keeps falling open [X(]

Yes, I found it bewildering at first, but believe me it gets better.

On game start, you may want to cover the Tabs up top, in particular the fourth on the left above the message box (Policies).
There are a ton of options that will affect how your Advisors/Leaders react to certain situations.

The Policy really only needs to be set up once and saved, and it will then be used for any new games without having to set up everything again.



Bonus FYI, you mentioned the early Warp Drives and weren't sure what the speed numbers meant other than higher begin better.

Here's the low down on how big this game really is :

Warp Drive speed numbers refer to how many Pixels are traveled per second
Weapon Range numbers refer to number of Pixels they reach out too, and the speed numbers for each weapon type is Pixels per second as well

Cool, but so what?
A typical Solar System is ~50,000 Pixels wide
Each Sector (Grid Square) is 2,000,000 Pixels x 2,000,000 Pixels . . . so on a 15 x 15 Map there are 900,000,000,000,000 Pixels

The Pixel referred too is one dot at maximum zoom in.

i would also recommend you watch at the tutorial series of das24680, he divided the videos into several parts, each of their own focusing on particular parts of the game. so you can use it like a video-wiki

You are not alone, wagtunes. I just bought Distant Worlds - Universe yesterday while it was on sale and I'm in the same boat that you are.

I *really* recommend starting your first game in the pre-warp era. It simplifies things immensely if you find it difficult to work out what is going on.
