Defensive terrain (forest) modifier

Just started playing the "starter Scenario" as Union vs computer. I'm a little confused about the way terrain effects the combat results.
I moved the 5th Wisconsin Reg. to the forest hex at 102, 100. The Rebs moved the 4th S.c. to a clear hex at 103,101. I was expecting to get a positive attack strength modifier due to the fact that my unit was firing from cover (Forest) at a unit in clear terrain. Much to my surprise the exact opposite happened. The 5th Wisconsin suffered a negative terrain modifier for their attack, and the 4th S.C. had a "0" terrain modifier for their counter-attack. In examining the detailed combat report I didn't see any bonus for being in the forest. I was actually penalized for attacking / firing from a forest hex at a unit in clear terrain. What am I missing? Seems a little counter-intuitive.

BTW, really enjoying the game:)

Eric can correct me if I'm wrong -- as programmer, he alone knows all of the code's secrets -- but my guess is that if you have 500+ men in a woods hex they will not be able to form a proper line with maximum frontage, and thus will not inflict as much damage. However, trees should give you a defensive bonus, especially if your unit is in skirmish mode. (So rather than the attack bonus you were expecting, you get a defense bonus, which is also good.)

Glad you're enjoying it.

Gil,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it seems the only time I get a negative modifier while in a forest hex is when skirmishers are deployed. As I said, this is a game mechanic I'll have to get used to. I'm used to forest type hexes providing some sort of defensive bonus in hex based games.

I keep reading that skirmishers in forest shooting out to clearing are good but I see that skirmishers anywhere lower your fire power every time. (unless your regiment has good skirmishers perk where it doesnt really debuff your fire power that much)

So overall to me skirmishers just good for keeping casualties down especially from arty.
