New German Battleships?

I just read an AP story about German plans to acquire a new air defense system (MEADS)= 4 billion Euros, and to spend another 3.9 billion Euros on four "multipurpose battleships"...the first to be delivered in 2023. Does the AP know what a battleship is?...or do they really mean a surface combat ship?...and just use "battleship" in a generic way?...maybe something bigger than the Frigates Germany currently has for its surface fleet? Maybe closer to a destroyer?...they are currently building a new class of frigates that are really destroyers in size.

No idea but it could just be the usual journalist nonsense. The number of times I've seen HMS Belfast described as a battleship.... [8|]

I'm not even going to google or anything but I bet 10 imaginary internet dollars that the German word for 'surface combat vessel' or similar directly translates to 'battleship'.

e: Germany's really good at selling Navel vessels all round the world though, it's not surprising they're keeping up to date

Battleship is used generically by some European media for almost any type of warship.

They mean "war" ship... not "line-of-battle" ship.

Germany is looking to acquire four "multi-purpose combatants". I think that's the most accurate translation. Haven't heard of someone using the term battleship.

Imagine how excited the international audience would react if Germany was in fact putting a 1000 feet battleship called "Bismarck" into service. Would be great and also odd and nuts at the same time. But somehow I like the idea. Come on people, much of you do too![:D]

But this won't happen. The vessel we talk about here is the MKS 180, the "Mehrzweck-Kampfschiff 180" and it will be some sort of frigate.

Note that the German navy doesn't distinguish between frigate and destroyer anymore. The term destroyer was abandoned after phasing out of the Charles-F-Adams-Class as frigate does sound so more peaceful compared to destroyer. (German public likes the idea to have military only for peaceful purposes) Hence all ships of these sizes are called frigate

The concept of MKS 180 looks like an up-armed F125-class.

That is a rather dead-sexy little destroyer.
