How do you place skirmishers ahead of your main line?

Right click on the parent unit flag, press the 'unsplit' button, specify the size of unit you want to detach and then the Ai should move them forward themselves. Otherwise you can place them wherever you like.

there isn't an actual command? I tried your method of splitting but that just leaves blocks of men not scattered individuals

That is the command. If you have not turned their AI off they will head in fron of the parent unit, withdraw when cavalry approaches, tackle artillery, etc.

The ai skirmishers are great - they will form up and drive youre artillery off if unsupported, and they are tricky to catch with cavalry because they will return to the square if threatened.

Fascinating! Will try that out. See, a good use for the AI :)

When you comamnd directly the brigade they are under your strict control about the movement and target selection (I suggest eventually to detach them after the split, so to avoid that the brigade movement impact on them); when they are under AI brigade control they move and select targets and pursuit all alone.
