or change the weather and
nighttime to daytime.

than it would be okay, but still
difficult. but that´s the russian
front, it WAS a hard and bitter
fighting.

Frank,

I looked over the battle and removed the planes - not sure what they were supposed to do other than keep Russian heads down...

must admit that low visibility and planes do not make sense.

Good catch.

These two companion battles are based (loosely) on history from Erickson's book.

Basically, the early shock of the Russian counteroffensive had worn off and the Germans were beginning to display the dogged, stubborn defensive techniques that ultimately saved them the first winter and prevented any strategic Russian gains...

A veteran regiment from a battered German infantry division was assigned to hold Kaluga as long as possible so that defenses could be established farther back. No retreat.

The Russians slammed into this deadly situation full force with victorious but tired troops from 50th Army and others...

The nastiest sort of house-to-house street fighting developed with Germans strongpoints holding out at every street corner...a sort of preview of Stalingrad with roles reversed...

So I aimed for a battle that combined weakened Russian formations, deep winter conditions, well-fortified Germans, and a mix of urban and woods.

With all that, the planes seem a bit too much...

In the second battle, pay attention to the report of a relief column heading towards Kaluga!....
