I just bought these great old games last night and I having a bit of an issue with the Civil War game.
It seems that the Napoleon game have one more zoom level in 3D than the Civil War game does.

Why is this and is it supposed to be that way?

That is really going to be back if thats just how it is. I can see the Napoleon game well enough on the zoomed in 3D but since the Civil War game does not zoom is as far it makes it almost impossible to see the pieces.

Is there a fix for this or is it just that way?

There is a zoom you can change, look around in the options and you can zoom it in if you want. When I play this game I usually zoom it in and then change my monitor resolution so things are plenty big enough.

Changing monitor resolution should not be what you have to do here. Tiller's versions offered through John Tiller Software give you a great 3D Normal view (i.e. very close up). This is a flaw in matrix's offering of the CW games it appears.
