Formation Facings?

One thing I'm somewhat unclear on while playing the game.
Do combat elements have a 'facing' in this game? If so, how is it determined and illustrated in the game? Is there a way to rotate a unit to face a specific direction, or is it based simply upon which side of a hex a unit entered into it from? Or it is one of those things that is automatically managed and dynamically changes based upon movements, enemy positions, and what each force does?
