commanders all over the map

What makes the commanders, once they have reached the area you have ordered them to go to, suddenly, for no apparent reason, go wandering off to who knows where? I have one commander (in this current scenario) that is halfway across the map (sandbox game, not campaign), and sending him orders takes a good 5 to 10 minutes, then likewise for him to issue orders to his sub units. He's a brigade cmdr. This is not unique to this individual either. Alot of them seem to do this.

Any ideas other than TC his butt and make him sit still?

Are you sure it wasn't a death substitution? When a commander dies (and brigade commanders die frequently), the substitution came far from the map.

I've seen the same thing, corps and division commanders far away often riding AWAY from the action, while their units are in the fight.

Positive it wasn't a death substitute. This happens frequently. I've checked and rechecked the names, they are off in their own little world while their units are knee deep in it.

When you see this, where does the Brigade commander move to? Maybe he is moving to one of his units, which retreated and is now rallying away from the frontline?

Over the hill.. and far away :)

Seriously, I thought at first they were doing that too, but they aren't. I've even have one commit suicide by riding directly into an enemy regiment. Would be nice if they would do this and then send back reports on what they see (i.e. a scouting report), but they don't.
