Moving groups in distant locations

I have tried twice to move full brigades in a distant location with a group order.
These brigades were on a road in a deep forest (battle of Williamsburg).
These two units have not really moved using the road during the following turns. Instead, they have marched in the forest hexes despite their higher cost in MP. I don't know if it is a bug.

It's hard to say without knowing the details of the movement situation. The movement routines do a road-first search to attempt to get to their destinations, but there are many things that can cause the road-first search to fail. Failing that they then do an a-star search. The routines have been fairly well tested, but it is possible that some other routine could be better -- a-star does not always find the most optimal path, though the sorts of routines that would find the most optimal path on maps of this side would probably be prohibitively long to run. I have been considering forcing units on a road to follow the road longer, in essence ignoring what the movement routines calculate up until the point at which they can no longer move along the road.

I don't have any saved game.
One of the road was a muddy road, it was perhaps less costly to move in forest hex to cover this distance.
Thanks for these explanations. I will try again using this kind of moves to see what happens and to send a saved game.
