I have noticed a recent problem with the morale of Soviet divisions. I am playing the Soviets in two PBEM games and both games are in 1942. My practice is to keep new divisions out of the frontline to allow them to build up. Recently, however, the morale of new divisions has stopped increasing. The divisions are stationary, a long way from the frontline, in supply, in refit mode, attached to HQs with commanders with morale ratings of 6 and within two hexes of these HQs. The divisions have filled out in terms of numbers of men and guns, but their morale has not changed and is stuck between 40 and 44. I have identified nine divisions in one game for which these conditions apply and two divisions have had no change in their morale for six turns.

This problem only appeared recently and does not appear to affect rifle brigades. I am playing version 1.0804 of the game. What is wrong here?

Soviet National Morale in this period is 40, so there is little chance it will rise above that for units in the rear.

Sov NM goes back up to 45, Oct '42.

Rifle BDEs have a base morale of 50 even when Soviet national morale drops.

So your best case is to leave as much of your army in the rear as rifle BDEs. Then when you need them combine them into divisions so you have a division with 50 morale for at least a couple turns.

All, Sov x are 50 morale. Rifle, Naval Rifle, Naval Inf, and Tank.

Naval rifle morphs into regular rifle sometime in '43 (check TOE) and then can combine to xx. Naval Inf stays x.

Naval Rifle stays Naval Rifle but can be merged as other Rifle Bdes. Naval Inf does not merge.

Corrected by the master, yet again, just wanted to see if you were awake.

Thanks, everyone. It looked to me like Soviet national morale was only 40, although this is not what the rule book says. Oh well. I'll just add it to the long list of mistakes I have made.
