Title says it all. I've tried everything - reinstall, compatibly mode, the whole nine yards. When I start the game it goes to the main menu loading screen and then just says the program has stopped working. Basically have no idea what to do and feel like I threw away a lot of money. I assume it just does not work on Windows 10.
In a log file I did get an error that I attached as a sreenshot.

It works for me even with no compatibility mode. Check to upgrade your video card (ATI ou NVIDIA), upgrade process doesn't take them in charge.
Or may be an other component to upgrade in win 10 like sound card.

This error happens when the game graphical engine try to detect the direct3d information uisng the directx9 function GetDeviceCaps. So I think or a driver update like I suggest or a new install of directx are possible things to test.

My video card driver is up to date. GTX 760. And DirectX is up to date too. I'm pretty stumped.

Ok everybody it only worked if I run it in Windows 98/ME compatibility mode. Very weird. I originally did not even bother trying that. Although now the scenario texts are blank and when I click begin nothing happens.

Have you other games using Directx9 on the PC?

Try to execute the dxdiag and see under screen if no problems is signaled and the direct3d accelation is enable

No problem is signaled. It says running Directx 12 and all three accelerations are enabled

Check what you see under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Direct3D and under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Direct3D in regedit. Is very probably during the upgrade a registry entry important for the directx9 3d what deleted or changed and now the function of above is unable to have the correct information

Thanks for the continued help. The attachment is what I see. Not sure what all the values in the folders should be.

My suggestion is to try to uninstall the game, launch a registry cleaner program like CCleaner, try to install some other game you can have better if still using directx9 (example Gettysburg if you have it) and execute it. Check if it works. Restart the PC and reinstall WL better if under another path

Your last suggestion worked. Thank you so much. Yes it must have been something wrong with my registry. Installing my game on the internal hard drive, instead of my external one, fixed the issue.
