Is it possible to mod the sound a ship's engine makes? I have a bunch of customized sounds of different thruster sounds. I see in the component file a column for sounds, but I think only the weapons specify a usage for those sounds.

Check the modding guide. Sound effects only for weapons. Luckily ship engines don't make noise, or I would have to mute the game for sure
