The font changes to a lime green-ish color, the text is too big for their boxes, there are no pictures or animations whatsoever, but the whole game runs like 4x faster and doesn't lag at all like it usually does.

What could be causing this?

My guess is your graphics card and driver.

For the past year I was stuck running the game on an old garage back up computer that was underpowered.

Alt+Tabbing caused a lot of grief as the entire image came back up scrambled with horizontal lines across the screen and would take about 5-7 seconds to sort itself out and display properly.


My take is that the game in full screen mode does not like to be minimized.

Many here will tell you to switch to windowed mode, but personally I detest playing any game in windowed mode.

It very well could be my hardware. Unfortunately, I'm using an Intel Celeron CPU with the HD Integrated Graphics on a laptop until I can afford a decent gaming rig.

Try running in windowed mode instead of full screen mode. Alt-tabbing to another application behaves a little differently then.
