This friend of mine is in this PBEM game Scen 17 as allies and my...I mean his ..opponent seems to be smarter. Based on false report of 2 Jap CV's near Rabaul, I..I mean he...sent his 2 carriers up near Lunga to beat up Jap transport TF's. well, wouldnt you know, the Jap CV's and the Shoho are really sitting up by Lunga..and...yada yada yada...I ..I mean he.. loses both his carriers and the air crews on like day FIVE OF THE SCENARIO!!

So naturally, he (my friend) is getting steamrolled, while waiting for help from Pearl. So here is the question he wanted me to ask: If he were to build an Air Combat TF with the Long Island (with no air group), could that be used as a bluff to make enemy surface TF's turn away if they are set on "retirement allowed"?

It's loss of essence, Mandrake.

I dunno. My guess is that phony hobgoblins don't scare the enemy much. CVEs aren't likely to be coded into the mix the same way CVs are. It's an interesting idea, although "I'll bite your legs off" is the expression that comes to mind, sir knight...
