So, to give or get a defensive advantage bestowed by say, a pre-built hull down position on say level ground, would an embankment do it? Provide a defensive column shift?

Cheers carl, I'd probably use an IP for that.

Hello carl! Out of my memory: IPs do while trenches, pillboxes bunkers don't.

OK, by my computer now. Embankment has a .80 terrain/hex modifier, while an IP has a .75 modifier.
So I guess which one to choose has to do with the map and the battle situation being emulated too. Were the tanks on a reverse slope, then embankment would do a fine job. If they were in specially prepared positions, well that is what the IPs are for.
Reverse slope, prepared positions, nothing stops you using both [8D]

roger that CR!, I got off my lazy duff and hit the manual, sometimes its whats not said than said, for example, bunkers pillboxes citys etc. receive no def. adv. for vehicles, it Doesn't say that for IP's which means it appears they get the def. adjustments to their adv.
