I am playing the Campaign series East front and can I switch to unit counters instead of the 3d counters? It's just difficult to see everything with such small icons on the bottom of the screen?

If I understood you correctly you wish to change one of the 3D views to a 2D view? The three 3D views are easily changed by hitting '1', '2', or '3' key, '1' being the largest view and '3' the smallest. The two 2D views are available via '4' and '5' keys.

Alternatively, they are available via Display menu option.

For small Toolbar icons at the bottom of the screen, see if there's a better toolbar size available via Options -> Toolbar -< None / Classic / Standard / Large option.
