No.

I don't think rank affects pilots performance.

There is a way to put a pilot into another unit if he's listed in the leader database by using the editor but it will only affect where he starts in a scenario not an ongoing game. Rank has no effect other than how the commanders leadership & morale ratings affect the unit.
