I'm trying to run the Waterloo scenario as British side. Got this EAF error after a couple of battles. I set the program to run as Administrator and tried again; got the error again. Tried deleting that userpath.ini file and tried again; got the error again after a couple of battles. Screenshot attached. Now what?

OK quick update. I rebooted and tried again. Managed to get through all 7 turns without the error. BTW, this is Win 10 64-bit. Looks like running as Admin, deleting userpath.ini and rebooting works OK?

Now, to figure out as a newbie with this AGEOD system what's going on during these turns...

what folder is the game installed to?

did you do a manual install and place it in a none default location as for many it works better out side of the program files one which it default to. sorry for you troubles, also right click the game exe, to always run as admin, tick the box and add game exe to white list in your AV program, it all helps

I installed the game to C:\Games\Wars of Napoleon. Getting the error again today. Tried Win 8 compatibility and that didn't help either. Again, this is just the Waterloo scenario playing pretty much hands-off as British to watch see the game plays. Getting this error is not helpful.

Another update.  I uninstalled the game yesterday and did a clean reinstall, running as Admin.  Seems to be doing better now.  I'm getting battle screens to select postures and such, which I wasn't seeing before.  So perhaps just an installation glitch.  If anybody's noticing....

That's definitively a problem with writing rights. The game needs to write logs and stuff on your hard disk.

FYI, I am still getting this error. I have uninstalled/reinstalled the game and Jan13 patch twice and it runs OK initially and later I start getting these "Error Accessing File" messages and then crash. Both the autorun and NGC executables are set to run program as administrator under the compatibility tab and all users permissions have been set to full control under the security tab.

Again, this is on a 64-bit Windows 10 system. I've run DxDiag and there are no issues. I have run other checks and updates and everything is in order. I do not have this issue with any other games. So, if this is definitely a problem with writing rights, then what am I missing that I need to do?

check to see if your anti virus is blocking or stopping the file writes as i'm on win 10 64bit pro, and installed in same location, well it was elsewhere but i uninstalled and re installed to suit yours and it works fine, so only thing i can think of is a AV program, as everything else is normal, and as nobody else has had the same issue, yours in the first i'm sorry to say with a writes issue anyway.

was it a upgrade to windows 10 or a clean install?

as i found this on the M/S data base for known update errors accessing files,.

1. Right-click on the drive that is causing the problem.
2. Left-click on Properties.
3. Click on the Security tab.
4. In the first window click on Administrators (your computer name-PC Administrators).
5. Just below the window click on Edit.
6. Click on Administrators (your computer name-PC Administrators) again.
7. Here's the key to making it work. If Apply is grayed-out, check a box in the Deny column. It will then bring up Apply.

8. Check a box in the Allow column. It should check all of the boxes except the last one and uncheck all of the boxes in the Deny column.
9. Click Apply. It should run a scan of the files in the drive. When the scan is finished, click Ok. The first box should still be open.
10. In the first window, click on Users (your computer name-PC\Users) and repeat steps 5-9, of course clicking on Users (your computer name-PC\Users)
instead of Administrators (your computer name-PC Administrators).
NOTE: You may not have to click in the Deny column after the first scan is completed for step 10 as indicated in step 7.

See if that helps, but as it's not game related as files are unlocked with the game, only folders made on the pc can set to denies access or programs installed or running, game files have to be unlocked to write logs as Pocus has already mentioned, so no point altering permissions or nobodies would work...

this above may or may not work, it's scans for locked files with permission locked and unlocks them, as your only doing it on the game folder it wont matter, it's a full drive scan shown, you just need to alter it to a single folder as such


instructions say drive, we alter to folder as we dont need to scan all the pc, just game install folder only



first right click on the game installation folder and follow message until you get to screen shown, look at the tabs there and see if one your names in it and 2, all 3 and full access to the folder and files, as long as they are all ticked except the special one, it will work, if not then all it with edit, and apply, no idea why they aren't either as mine are and running same version as you, good luck

This was a new system with a clean Windows 10 install about 6 months ago. I verified WON was excluded from my Norton Security scans.

So, I did try clearing the permissions for both Administrators and myself as user using the Deny and then Allow. Everything was checked to allow full control before, but maybe this reset was needed. Anyways, I did that, rebooted, and ran WON for 4 turns without an error. Maybe that was the trick needed?

I will see how it goes. Odd that nobody else has reported a similar issue, but if anyone does then they can try this too. Thanks!
