How do I tell what card I have chosen for command focus once played? Would be nice to have that info handy.

Just do a mouse over in the unit/Hq info screen. There are also different symbols for each type of focus you have selected.

the cards say so on them, they update dynamically.

It's also in the logs.

Well reducing the retreat percent on the russian front line armies works pretty good in opening holes. I'm not sure if it reduces the number of losses they suffer. I caused ~120k of russian losses. I am not the greatest player so I don't know if that is good, bad or average compared to losses played without any modifications. For what it's worth I played focus cards on panzerarmies when possible, left the air force on interdiction for the first turn, played artillery on an infantry army on each front and attacked generally everywhere moving back line unit up to launch the first attack on a hex where possible. 2 inf divisions always caused a retreat except in 1 attack. A reasonable pocket was formed in AGC territory.

I think reducing the retreat level would certainly help make the first turn 'work' better. I would have liked to see more surrenders, only a handful of non-surrounded units broke, usually on the third attack but I was able to make a few holes in the line that cannot easily be closed.
