Something is wrong with the detection abilities of binoculars or description of weather conditions. In the test scenario I have generic infantry platoon detecting and identifying merchant vessel at 6 nm, during night, with light rain and 'light fog 0-2k feet'. If the weather is clear that would be believable, but in fog spotting ship from over 10 km is impossible. So it is either issue with sensor capability, weather modeling, or weather conditions description.
