I am having great difficulty performing a deliberate attack from more than one hex.

Are all units capable of attacking? If some are short of MPs this can cause problems.

Assuming you are holding the shift key down while mousing over the stacks, the units will appear on the right. Sometimes some units are listed as available to make the attack on the right side of the screen even though they don't actually have the MPs to make a deliberate attack (usually due to extra costs of attacking over a river). You need to deselect these units. Sometimes a unit that is unready and has already moved or an HQ might be selected. So you may have to deselect some units on the right side in order to get the attack to go off.
