"The moment is here. The time is now."

Hello all! This is my first AAR I've ever done and I'm hoping this PBEM will go well. I (the great and glorious Sheperd of N7) against a formidable opponent in Anachro. Myself as the good guys (the Empire of the Rising Sun) Anachro as the allies.

I have thought long and hard for many weeks about my grand strategy and I am truly ready to take the fight to Anachro and his endless horde of supply and industry. I am excited and hopefull to hear input, comments, questions and concerns as well as constructive criticism from everyone who views this AAR.

Our major rules:
1. Moving restricted LCU's over national borders must be "bought" with PP's.
2. No strategic bombing in China until 43
3. PDU's off
4. Historical first turn off (need to plan and strike efficiently. no Pearl Harbour attack nonsense).

Good luck. Sheperd has fought a few previous skimishes with me, think of them as practice rounds. He as promised me that he will now deliver the greatest strategy ever seen which will ensure Japanese victory. We'll see. With that, I bid this thread adieu.

Initial Plans

1. Land invasion force on the coast of China, hopefully with a little luck and determination will be able to conquer entire Chinese country by late 43. I have chosen China as my main ToW as I consider it to be valuable with its industrial capabilities in the cities and also by capturing China it allows me to assist my forces in Burma (which I have decided that I will get to Calcutta and then form a defensive line that extends to the mountains in the north.)

2. As all of us JFB's know, we only have so much fuel... I believe we have enough for 1 complete year of operations until our reserves will be bled dry. That is why I have decided to initiate Operation PAL- the invasion of the DEI through the bases Merak and Osthaven. It will have to wait until I get enough PP's to send some LCU's to unrestricted HQ's (hopefully will be possible in Febuary of 42 as I have spent all my PP's on moving ARM units into central China from the Kwangtung Army.

The 4th Inf Division has been proudly chosen to invade Osthaven. AS some of you might know I like to go straight for Palembang. No more. I have learned my mistakes and have licked my wounds.

3. Establishing a good pilot training program will be vital. Rotate pilots every 6 weeks through each training unit.

4. All R&D factories will be switched to various airframes. I have decided on a very strict guideline of aircraft that I will be using (no researching Oscar-IV's, they're are obsolete no matter what version IMO) I was thinking my main Army fighter will be Ki-44's until the Frank and George become available. Small numbers of Jacks will be built although they will be used for home defence. I am "skipping" over the later airframes of the A6M and will instead focus on the A7M. But now my dilemma.. do I go with only B7A Graces? or "split" my carrier attack aircraft with Judy's and Jill's...

I'm willing to listen to input and any concerns you all may have. I will also go more in detail in my next post. Keep in mind this is only a quick overlay of my plans, more to follow.

What about banning moving fuel by xAKs? This would make tankers a strategic asset for both sides.

With PDU = OFF, you will not have near as much flexibility to choose the planes you want to build. Your choices are really governed by upgrade paths. You will need to look at each and every air group and verify the upgrade path and depending on those results decide what to build. There are a couple of AARs with PDU = OFF but I do not know if they are DDB. If you have played PDU = OFF before and know exactly what to do then ... well ... never mind ... [:)]

I think the Focus China is not a bad thing. Knocking China out of the war really helps. I wish I had done it earlier in my game.

You will need to look at each and every air group and verify the upgrade path and depending on those results decide what to build. There are a couple of AARs with PDU = OFF but I do not know if they are DDB. If you have played PDU = OFF before and know exactly what to do then ... well ... never mind ... [:)]

I think the Focus China is not a bad thing. Knocking China out of the war really helps. I wish I had done it earlier in my game.

You have lost the game with this thinking. [X(] I hope you haven't actually massively changed the r&d program. If yes, you might want to talk about a restart.

You have lost the game with this thinking. I hope you haven't actually massively changed the r&d program. If yes, you might want to talk about a restart.

There is one squadron that can upgrade to a George in 1943. You will find only 3-4 squadrons are capable of upgrading to Franks from the Tojo but you most likely won't get that far.

I have made the corrections, don't worry I do my research and spend my time looking at each air unit carefully. Unfortunately I've come to the same conclusion as you have. Oscars it is...
Also for my Carrier attack planes I have decided upon DY3's as almost all dive bomber squadrons can upgrade to them. B6N2a's as well it seems for torpedo bombers are the way to go.

Just so you all know this is not my first game with PDU's off. (although it is first PBEM game with them off)

This will also be my first time I've ever exclusively focused on China. I'd gladly welcome any tips and tricks you all may have. I have been thinking about withdrawing all forces from the Marshall island chain and sending them to closer locations (Marcus, Truk, Guam******* and Saipan********)

My reasoning for this is that it shortens my supply lines and I also don't want to IMO waste supplies trying to fortify an un-defendable position that offers me nothing but an early warning system into an invasion of the southeast pacific (where I will not be expanding to anyways) Any concerns?

Day one plans (December 7th, 1941)

Capturing the coast of China is a daring operation that will be conducted by some of the finest troops in the Japanese arsenal. An invasion of Borneo will also be very necessary as to provide air cover to my invasion fleets that will be going for Osthaven and Merak in early 42 (hopefully Feb) Singapore will have to be left alone for now but I consider it a necessary price to pay. The KB will be located in the South China sea and will be providing air support for all ships in that area fighting the Asiatic surface fleets.

Is Pearl Harbor on the menu?

I have learned my lessons BillBrown[&o] In fact I will not be expanding at all towards the west coast USA no Midway, no Johnston, NO PEARL HARBOUR!! I am content with building a logistically sound and easily supplied empire. The only long range excursions I plan to undertake is a possible invasion of southern India (using Ceylon as a staging area) but that will depend on the situation when the time comes (planning that for late 42, as long as everything goes well)

Some of you may criticise my decision to go "small" rather than big but honestly my thinking and logic for this is that going small just saves me more ships, more supplies, more fuel.
New Guinea will be the furthest I expand towards the south. (other than Batavia and the southern DEI Islands)

My submarines will be my early warning system. No outposts on far away islands that have to be supplied by a ship risking its crews lives. I am aware that Japan has a large merchant fleet but I ask you this- How valuable are those ships with no supply to transport?[:)]

Build and fortify is the name of the game. Make him come to me, not vice-versa. At least that's the plan for the pacific and the navy.

Its an excellent suggestion Yaab but I'll admit right now that with my noobish skill and plans I will be needing every single ship that can carry fuel to be available[8D]. I'll definitely keep that suggestion in mind for a future game.

If you are going to focus on China, make sure you devote most of your air power to ground attack. This will make things easier on your army troopers.

Work the "Magic Highway" from turn one. Move construction engineers to Fusan and and start building the port. Setup small TFs to start hauling resources from here to prime the pump. If you can't get things to flow directly from Singapore to Fusan, you can ship to Canton and go from there. This saves a tremendous amount of fuel in the long run.

Tanks rule in China. Get as many there as possible. Deliberate attacking with just tanks can be very productive while you wait for your infantry to recover.

Artillery rules in China as well.

Much of China can be "Herding Cats". Depending on where your opponent chooses to defend you might spend a lot of time wading around off road dealing with units. While destroying units is fine (keeping in mind they respawn after a certain time period in Chungking) pushing them around is better. Just watch the retreat option.

Wenchow (or whatever that city is just west of Shanghai) can be a tough nut. It can be bombarded from the sea if I remember correctly so maybe consider using a small TF to keep it suppressed and disrupted.

Isolate and bomb out places where he wants to defend. Eventually you can wear out any city he decides to defend. Close the hexsides and then bomb and deliberate attack.

Watch the stacking limits in China. There are some which have a very low stacking limits which can be tough to take. Be prepared to swap out divisions for fresh ones.

With stacking limits, supply can be an issue. An over stacked hex will eat supplies pretty rapidly. A major effort in China will eat supplies rapidly in general.

Close off the access to Burma (both for the Burma Road and for a place to retreat) early if possible. I let a bunch of Chinese units get away which later caused me issues.

While China is a real plumb, fuel and oil drive the game. Do not lose sight of securing the DEI and the other places which offer oil and fuel.

The interesting point about not defending the Marshal Islands is that he might not know you have left them open
and still wait until mid 1943 to invade them. He really has no place to use any Recon aircraft to see them.

Trust me, I know how dominant tanks are in China. He has essentially no defence against them other than wave after wave of troops for about 6 months.

Exactly what I was thinking BillBrown and I'm glad that I'm not the only person who sees the method to the madness. I just hope he doesn't realize that there is nothing there until he spends valuable time making an invasion task force.

The air raid on Singapore was especially effective. The point of it was to make him think I will be going for DEI early by shutting down his airfields. With luck, he'll put his forces on high alert there and not interfere too much with my Borneo landings. The loss of a CM was saddening but not heartbreaking. 2 torpedoes in her side and she went down moments later. Her captain will be remembered as the first ship commander killed in the great pacific war. His crew and himself will be given full military honours.

I think the soundest strategy in a PDU off, Scenario 1 setting is limited expansion (excepting China of course) coupled with aggressive early play. Sounds like you have such a game plan in mind. Good luck.

I think the soundest strategy in a PDU off, Scenario 1 setting is limited expansion (excepting China of course) coupled with aggressive early play. Sounds like you have such a game plan in mind. Good luck.
