Huge Allied Casualties

Hi Guys
Am just finishing my first campaign. Just kind of jumped into the game and played the AI as Allies.
Clearly made some big mistakes but learned a lot. One thing that I noticed was I was having huge casualties
every turn. On average 25,000 a turn to 500 or so German. I would look to see if there were any major battles
but there were none so I have to assume this was attrition from small actions all along the front but they are clearly
way to high. I started rotating units along the front to give them a rest but it didn't seem
to make a difference. I was repairing rail as I should and repairing ports as fast as I could. I think
I'm missing something fundamental and am hoping you can fill me in.
Also while I'm here. When a hex's ownership is pending to be mine does this prevent enemy units from entering if it is empty.
So for example if I surround an enemy held port with my units and then the next turn move my guys on leaving
the port with friendly hexes or pending friendly, does this prevent the enemy from entering/breaking out from that port?
It seems I had a whole ton of Corps surrounding ports that took forever to fall thereby robbing me of units
for the front line. Some of these ports never have been taken.
Finally I have to say I did play quite poorly as I never even got close to the Ruhr. I find it very difficult to get my
armour out and running. I'm used to Europa where you can overrun and break out with ten to one or greater odds.
Anyway thanks in advance for your advice/help!
